Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder triggered by the experience of a potentially life-threatening event such as military combat, rape, or a natural disaster.  The disorder is characterized by feelings of re-experiencing this traumatic event through flashbacks, nightmares, or recurrent and intrusive thoughts of the event.  Individuals with PTSD may become intensely distressed when they are exposed to reminders of the traumatic event and tend to avoid things associated with the event.  Individuals with PTSD tend have persistently high arousal, and may have difficulty with irritability, disrupted sleep, or trouble concentrating.
